ChatGPT Is Getting a Mac App
OpenAI has launched an official macOS app for ChatGPT, with a Windows version coming "later this year." "Both free and paid users will be able to access the new app, but it will only be available to ChatGPT Plus users starting today before a broader rollout in 'the coming weeks,'" reports The Verge. From the report: In the demo shown by OpenAI, users could open the ChatGPT desktop app in a small window, alongside another program. They asked ChatGPT questions about what's on their screen -- whether by typing or saying it. ChatGPT could then respond based on what it "sees." OpenAI says users can ask ChatGPT a question by using the Option + Space keyboard shortcut, as well as take and discuss screenshots within the app. Further reading: OpenAI Launches New Free Model GPT-4o Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Get a brand new Apple Watch Series 9 for less than $300 right now
Macworld If you’re looking for a new smartwatch, the Apple Watch Series 9 is the best of the best, with a gorgeous design, an incredible array of sensors, and the best display in the business. But it’s even better when you can get one for this cheap: Amazon is selling the 41mm Apple Watch Series 9 and 45mm Apple Watch Series 9 for $299 and $329, respectively, a savings of $100 and 25 percent off the MSRP. The Apple Watch Series 9 has either a 41mm or 45mm display with two exclusive features: an S9 chip that’s faster and smarter with a new four-core Neural Engine, and the new double-tap gesture that lets you control apps without touching the screen. Otherwise, it’s got the same array of sensors—ECG, heart rate, and temperature. (It also has a blood-oxygen sensor, though Apple has turned off functionality due to an ongoing patent dispute. It may return in the future though.) You’ll also get 18 hours of battery life, 50 meters of water resistance, Emergency SOS, and Crash Detection. In our 4-star review, we praised the Apple Watch Series 9 as “the best smartwatch Apple has ever made.” And at this price, it’s practically a steal, so go grab one before the price goes back up Apple Watch

OpenAI announces new Mac app and improved ChatGPT-4o model for all
Macworld The AI race is in full swing, and OpenAI just fired its latest salvo with its “Spring Update” announcements. The most significant new part is a new model, ChatGPT-4o (the “o” stands for “omni”), which is faster and smarter with better multi-model capabilities, and importantly, available to all users, not just those who subscribe. In addition, there are new tools for developers, a new GPT Store to more easily find customized GPTs, and crucially, a new Mac app (a Windows app will come later this year). ChatGPT-4o The focus of GPT-4o seems to be on making it easier to use for more people, but it is still OpenAI’s most capable AI product yet. Benchmarks from the company show industry-leading performance on text evaluation, automatic speech recognition, visual understanding, and more. Voice generation is improved with a more natural sound, more emotion, and the ability to do things like sing, be sarcastic, make jokes, and more. ChatGPT-4o delivers slightly better benchmarks than earlier versions of ChatGPT 4. It can serve as an auto-translator between two languages or translate the image of a menu in a foreign language. ChatGPT on your Mac Perhaps most interesting for Macworld readers is that OpenAI is finally moving its ChatGPT app beyond the iPhone and iPad. Starting today, the company is rolling out access to its new Mac app to Plus subscribers ($20 per month); free users will get access in the coming weeks, and a Windows app is coming later this year. The app will provide a simple keyboard shortcut (Option + Space) to summon ChatGPT and ask it a question, and you can quickly supply images or take screenshots of apps to have ChatGPT help you with what it “sees.” Voice conversations will be available using the existing Voice Mode, with the new audio and video capabilities of ChatGPT-4o coming shortly. The app also sports a streamlined interface with quicker access to past apps and a new ChatGPT Store that makes it easier to browse and find (free) customized GPTs that users and developers have built upon the ChatGPT platform.
